Document Summary

Hobbes looks to nature because it is pure and ordered, to see how humans acted before institutions of man. Humans are disposed to fight with one another. Problems arise from inability to enforce laws of nature. People driven by fear but able to reason. Because all people are able to kill one another they can and will if it suits them. Quarrel comes from competition, diffidence, and glory. Competition is individuals searching for personal gain. Glory is each man searching for greater reputation. Man does not do what is destructive to his life (discovered through reason) Means even under leviathan man does not have to kill himself (can be killed though justifiably) Human"s intrinsically want to be seen as better than others. Want to find peace, will go to war if can"t find it. Willing to stop warring in hopes of peace, both agree not to attack. Must forgive past offenses, makes it easier on oneself in the future.
