Composed of individual but connected parts that function as a complex whole. Open system: energy and material conversions, energy and material storage. External forcings: affect a system, are not affected by it. Internal feedbacks: interlinked interactions among components within a system. Processes interacting within systems that form looped chains of causes and effects.
