Wolves have been eradicated from most of their natural habitats. Extinct in nearly half of their historic range. Wolves and dogs are believed to have descended from a common ancestor, and there is a belief that dogs are directly descended from wolves. Wolves have biological characteristics that make them easy to domesticate. Wolves were fellow hunters with humans, either competitors or helpers. Enormous amount of respect for wolves-often religious symbols. Pre-european settlement: about 2,000,000 wolves in lower 48. Not an accident: deliberate target of federal government and conservation. Reasons for this were cultural, political and economical. In 1805, 35,000 wolves in what is now ynp. First action in the park was to get rid of native americans. States put bounties on the heads of wolves to reward private citizens. Roosevelt called wolves the beast of desolation -said it with a bible, made them seem like a demon. Wanted a set of young adult males and young adult females.
