Each network focuses on the child teacher relationship. Each category identifies what the teachers understanding of their student is. Knowing what the student"s strengths and weaknesses are only identifies areas the teacher can focus on. Knowing how the student performs, as well as why they perform that way are also identifiers for the teacher. ~ effective discourse establishes a community in which constructive discussion, questioning, and criticism are the mode. ~dialogues provide the format for novices to adopt the discourse structure, goals, values, and belief systems of scientific practice. ~questioning provokes discussion, and summarizing helps students establish where they are in preparation for tackling a new segment of text. (reciprocal teaching) Each student in the group serves as a leader and stimulates conversation while providing a summary of the material. Active style is most effective, teacher as facilitator. Passive style leaves student unsure of themselves, lack of self control.
