Purpose of metacognition awareness of one"s thinking allows on to develop a greater control over that thinking managing one"s thinking and attention- executive control. Metacognition results in expectations about belief, processing, we are constantly predicting what will happen next, what our actions will be. Increasing one"s metacognition leads to large gains in understanding and planning, shows us what beliefs we have that might be contradictory. Evaluate our beliefs and outcomes of problem solving. Tacit use: mostly just thinking and forming beliefs, and problem solving without being aware- not being metacognitive, unreflective thoughts. Aware use: simply being aware of our thoughts without trying to control or change them, eg. daydreaming. Strategic use: organizing thinking to enhance effectiveness, choosing different strategies to use to maximize success.
