Document Summary

Polymorphic=multiple alleles within a population therefore multiple phenotypes, more than one genetically distinct type ie blood types. Convergent evolution=2 animals evolve separately, but evolve to have similar characteristics. Homologous-organisms with similar characteristic that show they share a common ancestor. Evolution(microevolution)=generation to generation change in the proportions (frequencies) of alleles. Fitness=extent to which alleles in individual"s genotype are present in succeeding generations. Mutations- change in individual allele-generates differences on which evolutionary forces act-dna level change. Nonrandom mating-2 individuals mate that are more similar or less different than two random individuals of the population/than the average individuals. Selection- favorable alleles become more common/change in allele frequency because alleles differ in their effect on expected fitness of organisms. For natural selection to cause evolution must have heritable variation on a phenotypic trait among members and differential survival and reproduction associated with possession of that trait when both of these conditions are met, evolution will and must happen.
