Setting: the battle royal, college, the golden day. Plot: the author, asked to speak at an event, ends up having to fight in the event then give his speech. They give him a briefcase and money to go to college. At college, he is asked to entertain a donor mr. norton. They drive and have an intense conversation about mr. norton"s daughter and how the author is his future. He takes him to trueblood where he tells him his story of raping his daughter and the white people giving him money. Mr. norton gives him money and then feels sick. The author takes him to a bar the golden day where more problems continue. Burnside tells mr. norton of his story how he use to be a physician and now everyone sees him as crazy after the war. The author takes him back to the school where he has a meeting with the dean, mr. bledsoe.
