Document Summary

A group is a group when its members decide they are in a group. Interactions between group members, structure (having a place to meet), ideas/goals, mutual awareness all determine a group. Social facilitation- idea that we do our best when we are performing, we know how to do well, we will do it well when we perform in front of others. If we perform a task we do not do well, we will do worse when in front of others. It deals with the sense that doing things in front of others gives us awareness and arousal. 5-7 is optimal size of a group, doesn"t leave a lot of room for diversity of ideas. Wholists- greater sum of parts, deals with ideas and abstractions. Reductionists- less or equal to the sum of parts, you can measure, more of a physical thing (you can see, touch, feel)
