Document Summary

Exam #2 study guide: blauner s theory of internal colonialism distinguishes between conquered peoples who became a part of the united states (or any country) involuntarily and those who entered voluntarily. A group that is conquered, or annexed by force, is called a colonized minority; one that entered willingly is called an immigrant minority. Conditions of rigid competition: status is determined mostly, but not totally, but race. Small elites appear among generally disadvantaged minority groups: division of labor is largely, but not totally, dependent on race. In some situations, both majority and minority group members do the same kind of work, although the latter are nearly always paid less. Also, the job titles often are different for majority and minority group members even when the work is the same: separation of racial groups, or segregation, is extensive. Major outbursts of violence- usually attacks by majority group members against minorities- occur periodically.
