Document Summary

Dualism- mind and body are separate but interacting. Monism- mind is a property of the nervous system. Split brain- when the corpus callosum is cut so that the two hemispheres can"t communicate. Consciousness- being aware of our thoughts, perceptions, memories, and feelings. Descartes- (dualist) hydraulic view pineal gland directed gases to nerves. Galvani- discovered hydraulic view was wrong and electricity was the source. Muller- had the idea that all nerves carry the same message but produce different sensations b/c they travel in different channels (doctrine of specific nerve. Helmholtz- determined that neural conduction, although based on electrical impulses, is much slower than conduction in wires. Gall- first to say there was localization of the brain and the father of phrenology. Flourens- used ablation (removal of specific areas of the brain) to attack phrenology and to find out some animals regained function. Broca- studied stroke patient with deficit in speech a nd noticed damage to left frontal lobe.
