I have no time to describe my plans. I should say a good deal about the hours, & my discovery; how i dig out beautiful caves behind my characters; i think that gives exactly what i want; humanity, humour, depth. I feel certain that i am going mad again: i feel we can t go through another of these terrible times. I begin to hear voices, and cant concentrate. So i am doing what seems the best thing to do. End of the 20th century: what a thrill, what a shock, to be alive on a morning in june, prosperous, almost scandalously privileged, with a simple errand to run. Evan: a branch tapping at a window as the sound of horns began; as if the tree, being unsettled by wind, had somehow caused the music. Her husband, dan: alone with richie, she sometimes feels unmoored --- he is so entirely, persuasively himself. Alone with the child, though, she loses direction.
