Document Summary

Note: the exam will cover chapters 5, 6, 7, and 8, and all lectures from the self, attitudes, persuasion, conformity, and obedience. Chapter 5 and lecture on self knowledge: describe the research conducted on animals to assess the existence of a self-concept. Animals had mirrors placed in their cages until they begin to start looking at themselves. Once they recognized themselves, they had red dots placed on them to see if they would notice in the mirror. Self concept in humans begins at about age 2 and gets more complex as humans grow older. They describe themselves differently as age progresses: describe each of the 3 ways in which we gain information about the self. Self perception- inferring info about the self by observing own behaviors. Social comparison- learning about yourself through comparisons with others: describe 3 reasons why introspection is a bad source of self-knowledge.
