Ex: clomipramine; ssri"s which both benefit 60% of ocd patients: once drugs are discontinued, relapse often occurs, highly structured psychological treatments work somewhat better, but are not readily available. Exposure and ritual prevention (erp) - rituals are actively prevented and the patient is systematically and gradually exposed to the feared thoughts or situations. Patient learns that regardless if the rituals are performed, harm will not follow: results of : Drug clomipramine = 50: psychosurgery - most radical treatment option. In a study of 33 severely ocd people, who drugs and therapy didn"t work, 30% had substantial results from surgery.
