Having aggressive tendencies helps us secure the resources we have and acquire new ones. Establishing status is also important: displays of strength aid in establishing higher status of lower status members in a tribe or society. This allows others to recognize strength and decrease the likelihood of potential outside threat. For the high status individuals, it also opens up reproductive opportunities and females tend to wait for males with good genes, status, and resources in hopes of producing just a useful offspring. Proactive aggression is the result of goal directed behavior. Reactive aggression is a result of some kind of provocation. It is seen as unethical to perform some retaliation experiments because of potential injury, perceived potential injury, and disclosure. It"s also dif cult to tell if you are actually studying aggression or something like impulsiveness.
