Document Summary

The simplest possible experiment has two conditions. Randomized groups ~ used in between-subjects design in which participants are randomly assigned to one to one of two or more conditions. Matched-subjects ~ participants are matched into blocks on the basis of a variable the researcher believes relevant to the experiment. Then participants in each matched block are randomly assigned to one of the experimental or control conditions. They are more likely than a posttest-only design to detect the effects of an independent variable on behavior. A design in which two or more independent variables are manipulated. (often in factorial designs the independent variables are referred to as factors) a one-way experiment only allows us to examine the effects of only one independent variable. Researchers can use factorial designs to study the individual and combined effects of two or more factors within a single experiment.
