Document Summary

Review of the autonomic nervous system and respiratory diseases. See first couple pages of this section for review i"m thinking there won"t be questions on the physiology and anatomy parts. Autonomic nervous system: sympathetic/adrenergic fight or flight. Post-ganglionic fibers release catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine) Alpha predominantly in vascular smooth muscle, stimulation causes vasoconstriction. Dopaminergic predominantly in renal and coronary vessels, stimulation causes vasoconstriction. Beta 1 predominantly in heart, stimulation causes tremors and tachycardia. Beta 2 predominantly in lungs, stimulation causes tremors: parasympathetic/cholinergic rest and digest and bronchodilation. All ganglion and post-ganglionic fibers release acetylcholine. Sympathetic nervous system pharmacology: tyrosine dopa dopamine norepinephrine epinephrine, sympathomimetic (adrenergic) drugs. Uses: vasocontrictor ffor hypotensive shock, nasal decongestant. Phenylephrine (neo-synephrine ) and norepinephrine/ levarterenol (levophed : note: give levophed iv only due to vasoconstrictive effects can cause gangrene. Mechanism of action: stimulation of beta-receptors leads to the activation of adenylcyclase nd to an increase in the intracellular concentration of cyclic amp.
