Classics 253: greek and roman literature in translation. Office hours: w 1:30- 4:30 pm & by appointment. In this course, students will read a series of works ranging from the classical world to. Though structured partially chronologically, some of the texts are also paired to allow the class to discuss rhetorical techniques and authorial influence. In addition to selections from the hard copy texts, students will read versions of many of the texts from alternative translations. This additional reading will enable class discussion on translation techniques and the potential tension between authorial intention and translator choice. Students will engage readings from a wide range of perspectives, and they will be expected to thoroughly illuminate as well as evaluate these explorations both in the classroom setting and in their own writing. Consequently, active participation in the discussion of these readings, modes, and perspectives is of the utmost importance and highly encouraged.
