Communication - symbolic, transactional, process used by at least 2 people to create meaning. Each language consists of specific sounds (phonemes) which combine to form units of meaning. Language - socially shared code or system for representing concepts through the use of arbitrary symbols and rule-governed combination of those symbols. 3 properties = generative, dynamic, and rule-governed. 5 components of language : pragmatics - use of language to expresses one"s intentions. How we get things done with words : phonology - rules governing the structure, distribution, and sequencing of speech sounds. Phoneme = smallest unit of sound that can signal meaning. (english language = Phones - a speech sound representing a language: semantics - acquisition of word meaning or relations. System of rules governing the meaning or content of words and word combinations: syntax - organizational rule specify word order, sentence organization, and word relationship, morphology - internal organization that combined to make words.
