Civil law - regulates rights and duties between parties. Government can file a civil lawsuit but if it is prosecuting someone, it is for a criminal. One event can be the basis of both civil and criminal lawsuits. Law and morality - 2 separate things, but linked. Utiliatarian ethics - maximizes happiness and minimizes pain - greatest net benefit. Deontologial ehtics - doing the right things regardless of outcome. Rawlsian justice - what the rules for society we want if we didn"t know our place in society as. Court reapplies the decision to later cases, precedent. Changes in plessy v. ferg and brown v. board is a power the supreme court can do. No duty to assist someone in peril unless you created the danger.
