Know b thalassemia, sickle cell disease, signs/symptoms, underlying causes. Beta major (cooley" s anemia) are normal at birth, develop severe anemia in 1 st year . S/s: fatigue, shortness of breath, jaundice, high output cardiac failure d/t chronic anemia. Sickle cell disease : group of disorders characterized by abnormal hemoglobin s (hbs ). Genetic mutation in which valine replaces glutamic acid so that hbs reacts to deoxygenation and dehydration by solidifying and stretching the rbc into a long sickle shape.
