Document Summary

C h a p t e r 6 : s e x u a l i t y a n d a g i n g. Sexuality is an attempt to gain intimacy, to have warmth and closeness. More than just the hormonal system, reproductive system and genitals. It is a physical and psychological closeness that is part of human necessity. It includes an embrace, mutual stimulation, a touch, a couple holding hands on their daily walk. Elderly were once seen as prudish, asexual people and it seemed to be expected that as you grow older you lose sexual desire and any interest in the erotic or the sensual. Research shows however that the older people are sensual and have real needs for closeness and intimacy. Birth control changed the sex lived of the baby boomer generations, which led to the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s.
