Depressive disorders: major depressive disorder (more severe): characterized by major depressive episodes in the absence of mania (state of unsual elation, energy, and activity) or hypomania (relatively mild state of mania) Features: changes in emotional states, changes in motivation, changes in functioning and motor behavior, cognitive changes. Impacts everyday life, people lose interest in usual activities and pursuits, thoughts of death and suicide, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, impaired driving skills. Riske factors: age (most common in young adults), socioeconomic status (lower at greater risk), marital status (separated or divorced have higher rates) Seasonal affective (mood) disorder: changing of season leads to depression. Double depression: major depression + dysthymia = episodes are more severe: premenstrual dysphoric disorder: characterized by physical and mood-related symptoms occurring during the women"s premenstrual period.
