Social control: how we structure things, how we order things. Not just physical but also about social/normative/psychological control. Cultural scripts, and social interaction are examples of control. Labeling and stigma are control concepts as well. Informal: no police, nobody enforcing norms and cultural scripts, doing it yourself, personal or interactive level, social interaction & formal: move from social interaction to larger organizations and institutions. Formal rules and laws that dictate quite specifically how you are supposed to behave, what"s allowed what"s not allowed. Laws and rules formally written down, enforced, and sanctioned by specific organizations. Institutions systems that ensure laws are followed, people that don"t follow rules and go against the control get sanctioned and put away. As society, we need law that enforce order to maintain order. Social order is not always a given, more often than not fragile, can break down. Law crime deviance is how formal order is established.
