Statistics: a branch of mathematics that deals with the organization, analysis, and interpretation of data. Population: the set of people, animals, groups, etc. that we"re interested in understanding. Random sample: a set of members of the population selected in such a way that all individuals in the population have an equal chance of being in the sample. Inferential statistics: we use the data from our sample to draw inferences about the larger population from which the sample was drawn. Quantitative (numerical) variable: something that has numbers as values. Discrete: can take only certain values, not the ones in between. Ordinal scale: the values can only be interpreted in relative terms. You cant interpret the values themselves as having any speci c meaning. Can"t infer much of anything from a particular difference between values. Interval scale: a difference between the scores of a given amount always means the same thing.
