The relationships between plate tectonics and earthquakes are that the majority of earthquakes occur at plate boundaries. They mostly occur on the continental plates rather than the oceanic plates. He was the founder of modern earthquake studies and science of seismology. A seismograph is securely mounted to the surface of the earth, so when the ground starts shaking, the device case starts to move. The inside of the device does not move as the suspended mass lays at rest, while the springs move along with the earth to record a zigzag trace that shows the varying amplitude of ground oscillations beneath the instrument. The intensity was based on a scale of 1 to 12. The mercalli intensity scale measures the intensity of the earthquakes based on: Impressions of people involved, movement of objects, and damage to buildings. An earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground.
