To show misfortune in such a way that it moves the observer to act. Negative: weakens compassion: the media stereotypes and exploits human suffering, eroding our capacity to feel for the plight of others. Positive: strengthens compassion: the mass media may cultivate our capacity to care and feel responsible for others. Involves audiences in the thrill of being brought face to face with the violent destruction of human life, while at the same time liberating them from any moral responsibility towards the needs of victims.
