Document Summary

Study of structures and processes of mind and brain. Example: read words, put together into a sentence, evaluate its truth, raise your hand as response. Remember raise left hand if true, right if false. Can see brain, but never the mind. Mind mechanisms are unobservable, even as cause and effect are. The mind is like a black box - we can see the stimulus (input) and the response (the output), but we can"t see what goes on in the intermediate stage. Manifestations of the mind (output): behavior, physiology (brain activity) Titchener (and wundt): experiments on self, counting how many times they could identify different types of sensations (e. g. lungs, pain, tongue, etc) Difficult to verify observations: outsider can"t verify, can"t use scientific method. Private events, not public: even one"s own self can"t exactly identify the processes going on in their own mind. Ex) pavlov"s dogs: can"t see inside the dogs" heads, but can see the response.
