Arabia populated by nomadic tribes, moved around. West wanted spices and fabric from the far east. Red sea hard to sail up to the mediterranean. Used the great caravan route: camels transported goods up the coast of the red sea. Al-sham = the place on the left . Tribes provided protection, food, transportation for traders. Born and lived in mecca to a prominent caravan tribe. Traveled up the caravan route, visited mesopotamia. Submission to the will of the god of allah. Prophet: people who have direct contact to god. Said there were many prophets before him (ex: jesus) Quran: mohammad and followers wrote down stories. Islamic believers are committed to a sacred war to fight the infidels: those who do not follow islam. Hijrah: mohammad moved from mecca to medina after being exiled. After 20 years of preaching, a large cohort of tribes had united around him. When mohammad dies, the leaders closest to him must replace him.
