Balfour Declaration 1917
- The Balfour Declaration was written in 1917 by Lord Balfour of Britain. It wrote that the British
openly supported a Jewish state in the land of Palestine. This led to increased work with Zionist
leaders. The Arabs were not pleased with this declaration because in 1915, the British told them
that if they revolted against the Ottoman Empire, they would be rewarded with a state in
Palestine. This is where the saying “a twice promised land” comes from.
- Jews interpreted it as an allowance to settle on both sides of the Jordan, however it is
made clear in the White Paper of 1922 that they were not allowed to settle east of the
Jordan.
Arab Revolt of 1936-1939
-The Arab Revolt broke out as an attack against the Jews and British. On one hand the Arab
Revolt created a sense of Palestinian nationalism that had not existed before. However, the
revolt took an incredible toll on the population of the Palestinian community. It was clear that the
Arabs did not have a strong national organization and the leaders of the Palestinians were
wiped out during the revolt. The Palestinian society in turn now looks toward other Arab
countries for support and leadership. The Third White Paper is a direct response to the Arab
Revolt.
