Criminal justice system- the network of law enforcement, courts, and corrections institutions designed to enforce criminal laws and protect society from criminal behavior. Justice- the quality of fairness that must be present in the processes designed to determine if an individual is guilty of criminal wrongdoing. Goals of the criminal justice system: provide and maintain justice, prevent crime (deterrence, control crime through punishment and rehabilitation. The formal criminal justice process is outlined above, however the informal justice process involves the individual"s emotions and discretion involved in making decisions in the everyday setting. Jail is for less serious crimes with lesser sentences. Prison is for more serious crimes entailing longer sentences. Probation- serves sentence in community under supervision of a probation officer (contain general restrictions as well as sentence-specific conditions)
