History of big band: military service bands, include jazz ensemble no cost (usually), big band used for dance music. The band"s style determined by band leader and arranger. Required skills: ear training, jazz theory, rhythm, jazz keyboard, composition/improvisation, instrumental skills, jazz history, vocal skills. We teach these skills according to context: schedule, class size, age, ability, and prior experience guide decision. We may not receive equal time on each skills but each must be present. Want to create holistic approach for students, music ed is different than it used to be, its not just about playing right notes anymore. Teacher must time and decide what is most important for my students right. Aural skills should not be separate from rehearsal. Intro to jazz improv jazz vocab-acquired through listening practicing playing transcribing copying and analyzing. It teach students to find note on instrument without notation. For transcription-start with rhythm before pitch much better to start with simple trade transcriptions with students.
