Review for exam 3: treatment: any activity to make the offender less of a management problem while in prison and less of a criminal when released. Treatment tends to lower recidivism and enhance public safety. Treatment model: training, education, counseling, teaching, casework, religious activities, therapeutic communities, peer counseling, clinical activity, medical care. Classification: a process by which inmates are assigned to levels of custody and security level based on potential risk of escape, violence, victimization, suicide: reintegration model: rehab of the offender by supervision and treatment within the community. Ties between offenders, their families and employers need to be maintained. Jail: awaiting pretrial, convicted of misdemeanors, probation violators, parole violators. Bail bond violators and absconders, those in contempt of court, persons awaiting transfer to state, federal or other local authorities, temporarily detained persons. Half people in jail are awaiting trial. Number of jails declining, number of beds has risen. Newer larger jails are replacing smaller decrepit jails.
