• Cashier – taking your money and order
• Coffee gets made
• Inventory

• To generalize, different operations happen in the stores and outside, in front of the
customer and behind the scenes
Operations Process (Transformation Process)
• Input
o Goes through transformation process
• Becomes Output
o Output provides value
o Goal: satisfying customers
o Goal: profit
▪ If profit is not generated then there is no point
• Value Add: difference of value of inputs and outputs
o The role of operations is to add value
• Transformation processes change all the time based on consumer needs, change in
environment, etc.
o Want to improve the process – decrease costs, improve efficiencies, etc.
o Also want to continually meet/exceed customer needs
o Technology can change the transformation process
▪ Packaging, stocking, inventory, etc. can be changed by technology
▪ It can speed up the time that it takes to go through the transformation
process

▪ Doesn’t need to be physical transportation – Gmail partakes in logistics by

▪ Consumers can also experience physiological transformations that
companies need to adjust for
