The chinese exclusion act : 1882; chinese could not become u. s. citizens. Prohibited the chinese from gaining us citizenship. It was really an exclusionist and nativist movement in ca pushing for japanese exclusion mainly b/c the japanese had become successful in farming and agriculture as well as purchasing land. Even those who tried to become naturalized and took their case to court were faced with a challenge; they were denied based on their race --- Court ruled against them, saying that they were not racially white--part of the caucasian race. Also tried to argue on the grounds of assimability. The court struggled in its ruling with reconciling race as a popular concept, a scientific classification and as judicial and congressional precedent. Colorblind policies : race-neutral governmental policies that reject discrimination in any form in order to promote the goal of racial equality. Important to the civil rights movement and international anti-discrimination movements of 1950s-1960s.
