PHIL 100A Study Guide - Final Guide: Bidet, P53, Dalhousie University
Document Summary
The epicurean and stoic schools of ancient greek philosophy shared a materialistic view of the universe. In today"s society, we have a plurality of religions and schools of thought regarding the metaphysical. However, the ideology of our current historical paradigm, specifically the capitalist societies of the west, is also based in materialism. Ours, however, is a perverted materialism when compared to how the greeks understood materialism. I will begin this paper with a brief glimpse of startling statistics indicative of a problematic way of being. Next, i will show what aristotle, the stoics, and the epicureans believed was the foundation of a good life, and how capitalism in america does not abide by that view. I will discuss what is missing in our society today that was a common topic for the greeks, and how this omitted foundation relates to our pathological disease.
