In 1941, recommended dietary allowances (rda) and the food and nutrition board (now iom) determined the energy and 9 essential nutrients needed based on amounts to prevent deficiencies. In 1997 the dietary reference intakes(dri"s) and iom set different types of guidelines to target different populations. Dri"s are used for vitamins, minerals and macronutrients. Designed for planning and assessing diet of healthy people. Meant to promote good health and reduce incidence of chronic disease. Not used to determine deficiency, you need an evaluation using dietary, clinical, biochemical, and body size measurements. An e. a. r. is the average amount of nutrient required for good health, and the rda is set by adding a safety factor to the e. a. r. The ul is the highest amount you can take without toxicity. There are 4 sets of dri"s for macro and micronutrients: estimated average requirement (ear), adequate intakes (ai), recommended daily allowances (rda) and tolerable.
