Identified in 1982 by barry marshall & robin waren found in patients with chronic gastritis & gastric ulcers. Also linked to duodenal ulcers & stomach cancer. >505 of the world"s population has h. pylori in the upper gi tract making it the most widespread infection in the world. Curved shape allows penetration of mucous lining of the stomach causes inflammation of the stomach lining by production of toxins (vac-a) H. pylori is contagious, although the exact route of transmission is not known. Person-to-person transmission by either the oral-oral or fecal-oral is most likely. Consistent with these transmission routes, the bacteria have been isolated from feces, saliva and dental plaque of some infected people. Produces urease which breaks down urea to co2 and ammonia which neutralizes stomach acid diagnosed by looking for urea in the breathe no vaccine. Treatment: one week triple therapy: omeprazole (prilosec proton pump inhibitor), clarithromycin, and amoxicillin.
