Document Summary

The language faculty is a way of referring to all cognitive abilities that give rise to language in humans. Phoneme- the smallest segment of speech that leads to a meaningful difference between words. Ipa- created so that we can easily write phonemes. Vocal folds are the source of the sound for phonemes. Vocal tract acts as a filter on those frequencies, dampening some and amplifying others. The highest amplitude peaks in the filtered frequency are called formants. Even though physically vowel phonemes are combinations of three formants, we hear them as a single percept, as a unified speech sound. Phonemes are represented as a combination of articulatory features. Articulatory features are properties of a phoneme that is related to the way it is produced. Linguists have identified tongue backness and height as important for articulation. A ban on a sequence of phonemes is called a phonotactic constraint. Constraints consists of 3 parts, underlying representation, surface representation, and a rule.
