Document Summary

Human beings believe gods are responsible for everything, they believe they rule everything that happens, just & righteous. Gives credit to the gods for helping him kill hector. Athenian ruler, interested in the glory of the entire city state rather than just of himself. Achilles throws his spear at hector but misses. Then athena grabs the spear and gives it back to achilles, helping him. Then when hector goes to stab achilles, achilles strikes him in the neck. He praises the city in order to praise the dead, and in doing so delivers a rousing and beautiful address that outlines athenian character and aspiration. Athens depended on their ability to outlast the spartans with their money and sea power. Meanwhile, the spartans attempted to convince cities to revolt by telling them that they were fighting for a "free greece" and trying to draw the athenians from their city.
