Document Summary

Chapter 31 - vascular plant growth and development. Water lilies are one of the oldest plants around. They were land plants that went back to the water. Plants grew by increasing the numbers of organs (leaves, stems, roots, and flowers) Shoots are made up of repeating units of nodes and internodes. One or more leaves are attached at each node. Tissues are built from shoot apical meristem. New cells and organs are produced by apical meristems at the tips of all stems and roots. One small stem of each meristem contains cells that are self perpetuating, meaning that one daughter cell differentiates and the other does not (like stem cells) Shoot apical meristems are at the tip of each growing shoot. Older stems and leaves are closer to the center/bottom of the plant. Meristem cells appear dark in this section because the nuclei fill much of these actively dividing cells.
