Lecture 7: stereotypes: what is the princeton trilogy, a set of three studies conducted at princeton that demonstrated how stereotypes amongst students changed over time. The first study (1933) saw a large consensus of negative stereotypes against chinese, japanese, and blacks with the most positive for americans. The next study (1951) was a replication of the first that had lots of very negative stereotypes against japanese probably due to anti- Ingroup = familiar: outgroup = odd, even dangerous, underestimate the differences between members of other groups. They were made aware of their race and the stereotypes that come along with them, and they were pressured to perform well, consequentially choking when tested. The student"s competition is either : realistic threat condition: asian/science, no realistic threat: asian/pop culture, white/science, Aa are perfect including in their health, therefore not having mental health problems.
