Document Summary

Different types of racisms: institutionalized racism: form of racism expressed in the practice of sociopolitical institutions. **we must address institutionalized racism to stop the problem. Restricted access to education and employment opportunities. Nutrition, tobacco/alcohol use, lack of physical exercise. Blacks live with a concentration of economic and social disadvantage and absence of an infrastructure that promotes opportunity. Environmental factors: lower availability of health foods, heavy targeting of disadvantaged communities with advertising, lack of recreation facilities, concerned about personal safety. A lack of interpersonal relationships and trust among neighbors. Exposure to environmental toxins, poor quality housing, criminal victimization. Facilities are more likely to close, less likely to be stocked with medication, and may not receive the specialty care they need. Internalized racism is a contributing factor here. We saw a reduction in infant mortality when antidiscrimination laws were put into place, but when (1980) social welfare programs were cut, this gap got bigger again.
