People are heavily influenced by the expectations we put on them whether they understand the expectations or not. They then match their performance to what we expect them to do and their innate skills. Students that were labeled as bloomers (told they were smarter) performed better than non-bloomers. Rats that were said to be smarter did better in tests. When african american students were told they were taking an intelligence test, they underperformed. When they were told it was just a bunch of questions, the performance gap between races disappeared.
