Document Summary

The west is a term that is constantly under social, historical, and political reconstruction. Used to mean a geographic region referring to europe but took on an economic meaning in which the west is more developed and anything outside of europe was referred to the west. European colonization, becoming westernized referred to becoming civilized/colonized. Mainly monarchial political systems where citizenship did not exist and there was a vertical tie between the king and his subjects. Social system is corporate in nature and there is no social mobility. Status not based on money or power but on privileges such as not having to pay taxes or not being subject to certain kinds of punishment. Agricultural economy because industrialization had yet to occur. Clergy- first estate, nobility- second estate, everyone else (peasants/bourgeoisie)- third estate. Bourgeoisie (term for 3rd estate) was a very small but important group and the name developed into the notion for the middle class.
