Ethnomusicology 50b--jazz in american culture: 1940"s to present. Definition: musical movement that ranged in general from 1940-1955 that was primarily located on the east coast and was characterized by instrumental virtuosity, fast tempos, and improvisation based on the combination of harmonic structure and melody. Bebop musicians broke away from the conventional entertainment styles of the swing era and challenged themselves by creating new sounds that were complex and hard for audiences to follow and therefore mainly appealed to other musicians. 2: short or simple introductions and endings with complex and improvised solos, bebop highlighted solo and improvised performances; easier to do this in combos. Swing: woody herman"s thundering herd, stan kenton"s orchestra. Charlie bird parker: fast-paced improvisations, leader of the bebop era/ most influential musician of bebop, one of the most brilliant minds of the 20th century. Dexter gordon: first tenor saxophonists to speak bop language uniquely. Stan getz: notable also for his contribution to bossa nova.
