Gender inequality in hunter-gatherer societies originates from the fact that men, as hunters, provided meat to the community; because meat was a scarce resource, it consequently became a political vehicle through which men made alliances and arrangements. In other words, when men were able to bring in meat, they could establish agency and power in trading the meat and creating alliances and political relations with other families and individuals in the community. In fact, friedl refers to meat as a public gift that expects a reciprocal gift people became indebted to successful hunters, which in turn granted these hunters political power.
