Document Summary

A specific form of collective social action in which excluded or marginalized groups with a shared sense of purpose and solidarity mobilize themselves to affect social change and achieve specific goals through extra-institutional channels. Viewed as irrational behavior by uncontrolled masses. Something they are unhappy about- and want redress. The process of naming a perceived problem and convincing others that it is a legitimate problem. Reformist - aims to alter elements of the social order - pluralizing power of resources, but doesn"t want to fundamentally change it, wants to make it better. Revolutionary - aims to fundamentally transform the social order - doesn"t think it"s just broken, doesn"t want to make it better, thinks it must be scrapped & replaced. Reactionary - as opposed to the other types of movements this type of movement doesn"t want to pluralize power or resources, but rather rollback that pluralization. It often seeks to return to an imagined/idealized past.
