Document Summary

Definition: the ways in which we speak can uphold norms and structures of power, either by implicitly making claims about how things should be, or not recognizing that groups or practices exist that are not dominant. When teachers say ok boys and girls time to line up! they are using a common phrasing that sounds inclusive, but actually ignores the existence of people with non-binary genders. Use language to construct identities and group practices and projects, that rely on creating a binary opposition for which to compare ourselves to, often times another group that we misrepresent, homogenize, and vilify. Definition: meaning someone"s interpretation, being presented to you as if it is the real thing itself. Symbolic interactionism meets conflict theory when we begin to look at what groups have the power to create or disseminate representations, and how that power is used to maintain existing hierarchies.
