Document Summary

Unipolar: a hegemon , a single state clearly has the most power, stable because the state will prevent war/doesn"t want war because wants to maintain the status quo. Bipolar: two states share equal power, stable because the states won"t go to war because there is no guarantee that either side would win. Multipolar: three or more states in power, stable because shifting of alliances keeps states from going to war with one another by maintaining balance among states. Preemptive war: another state has enough power to attack you, so you attack them first. Preventative war: another state does not quite yet have enough power to attack you, but to make sure they never get that amount of power you attack them. Power balancing: argued by defensive realists, internal & external balancing will prevent war because it will become too costly to other states to engage in conflict with you.
