Document Summary
Not enough to just abolish slavery, new state government has to promise to respect equality before the laws. (every law treats everyone the same) Andrew johnson"s plan (new president after lincoln) Used the term restoration instead of lincoln"s. Hey johnson, we"re done with what you did and we"ll fight back now!!!!! To fight against violent in south (kkk) Grant : new president elected after johnson. He was general for lincoln during civil war, determined to protect blacks. Reunion and reaction -- war is over, but at expense of freed people. Takeaways: culture: the violent nature of westward expansion, the creation of the mythic american west, and how it continues to pervade our, same arguments used to justify expansion as moved into the pacific, caribbean. Europeans" see their arrivals to america and taking over of the natives land as manifest destiny . Europeans = superior/god"s will, natives = inferior. God wanted europeans to spread democracy and take control.
